Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 8

Although it was the 9th week of the semester, it was the 8th week of my internship in the Marketing Department at the Bloomsburg Public Library. This week alongside some typical promotion tasks to support upcoming library events and increase community engagement, I got to flex my creative writing skills to combine my major with my minor(s).

My main responsibility of the week was assisting with the promotional materials of an Author Talk event which will feature local author, Steven C. Wright. At the event, he will be discussing his book "The Weight I Carried" which is a memoir about dealing with the loss of his wife while hiking the Appalachian trail. To help promote this event, I was tasked with creating a description for us to use in social media captions and the library's website. I was given a promotional flyer for the book given to us by the publishers to work off, and I had to make my own version that was concise and engaging while still capturing the essence of the memoir like the original flyer did. I developed three different options for my supervisor to choose from, and she will choose one next week.

In addition to writing promotional descriptions, I also worked on submitting event information to various regional event listing websites to increase visibility and attendance. These sites included heartofpa.com, discovernepa.com, and artofpa.com. I had never heard of any of these sites but they seem very helpful for promotional services. These submissions involved carefully entering event details such as the date, time, location, and a brief description, while making sure the information was accurate and appealing to potential attendees.

One of the events I submitted was the Color Run, titled "Pages to Pavements," which is a family-friendly running event where participants are covered in colorful powder as they make their way through the course. There are a few different categories and pricings for types of run and age ranges. This event not only encourages community involvement and physical activity but also serves as a fundraiser to support the Columbia County Libraries so I expect it will be quite busy. It takes place on May 30th at the Bloomsburg fairgrounds.

The other event I submitted was the "Designer Purse Bingo" taking place on May 3rd which is $10 dollars for 10 games where the prizes are designer purses but there are also three special win cards to get gift cards from designer purse brands, a 50/50 raffle, a gently loved designer purse raffle, a lottery tree, pull-tabs, and great food! However, this one I did not submit to ArtOfPA because it's not art-related.

Overall, week eight allowed me to build on my communication and marketing skills by combining creative writing with practical promotional work. I gained experience in tailoring content for different purposes, working with event submission platforms, and contributing to real-world outreach efforts that support library programs and community events.
