Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 13

Week thirteen of my internship in the marketing department of the Bloomsburg Public Library was heavily focused on graphic design, communication, and helping promote the wide variety of programs the library offers for different age groups and interests. One of my first projects was creating a 16x9 promotional graphic for a new Tai Chi for Beginners session. The beginner class takes place from 9:30 to 10:00 right before the regular Tai Chi class, and the graphic also encouraged participants to stay afterward and join the full session if they felt comfortable. I tried to make the design feel calm, welcoming, and accessible to people who may feel nervous about trying something new. I also worked on several graphics for the Orangeville Public Library children’s programs so there would be promotional material available for the calendar and social media. These included graphics for School-Age STEAM Night and Mobile Maker Space programs. For the STEAM Night design, I focused on making i...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 12

Week twelve of my internship in the marketing department of the Bloomsburg Public Library involved communication, research, and the importance of approaching community work with empathy and sensitivity. Although the projects I worked on this week were not as large or event-focused as my previous assignments, they still taught me a lot about the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that help a library stay connected to the people it serves.  One unexpected task this week involved researching the family of a deceased woman so the library could send an acknowledgment letter for a donation made in her memory. To begin, I searched online for her obituary using her name, approximate location, and estimated date of death. Once I located the obituary, I carefully reviewed the list of surviving family members and cross-referenced those names with library patron information. After some searching, I was able to identify her daughter and locate the correct mailing address. The task almost f...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 11

At week eleven of my internship in the marketing department of the Bloomsburg Public Library involved updating promotional material and helping prepare for events.  One of my first projects was updating the dates on the Memory CafĂ© flyers for July through December. Although it sounds simple at first, it required careful attention to detail to make sure all of the information was accurate and easy to read. I also adjusted the layout so the updated dates still fit cleanly within the original design. Along with that project, I worked on rearranging elements of the library’s 100th Anniversary posters in Canva so they could properly fit different flyer sizes. It was interesting to see how much design changes when dimensions shift, because images, text spacing, and overall balance all have to be reconsidered. Another task this week involved printing and cutting flyers for the “Caught Red-Handed” Murder Mystery and Psychological Thriller book club. Preparing physical materials may ...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 10

Week ten of my internship in the marketing department of the Bloomsburg Public Library was a mix of planning, creativity, and a reminder that even the most organized schedules can change at the last minute.  At the beginning of the week, I submitted information about Steven C. Wright to Heart of PA, DiscoverNEPA, and Art of PA to help promote his author talk at the library. However, just a few days later, I found out that the event had to be rescheduled because he would be attending a wedding in London on the original date of June 20th. While it was a little frustrating to see that work become temporarily outdated, it was also a realistic glimpse into how often plans shift in professional environments. Flexibility is a skill I have yet to master. Another major task this week was creating a sign-up sheet for an upcoming Landmark Story event as part of the 100 Year Celebration events happening. I titled it “Tell Your Library Story!” to make it inviting and engaging. The sheet include...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 9

Week 9 of my internship in the Marketing Department of the Bloomsburg Public Library was focused on revising and improving content that had already been created and more event outreach.  My first big task of the week was  making updates to the poster that I had worked on during week six. My supervisor reviewed the designs and requested several small changes like changing the title from "Librarians & Democracies" to "Libraries & Democracies" in order to better represent the events purpose, adjusting the QR codes and additional contact information to be larger and therefore more visible, and a few minor edits to some of the descriptions. Although these changes felt trivial, I understand that even the smallest details can impact how professional and effective a final product appears. I also submitted the "Van Tassel Talk," scheduled for May 16th, to heartofpa.com and discovernepa.com. This event will focus on educating people about the libraries most...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 8

Although it was the 9th week of the semester, it was the 8th week of my internship in the Marketing Department at the Bloomsburg Public Library. This week alongside some typical promotion tasks to support upcoming library events and increase community engagement, I got to flex my creative writing skills to combine my major with my minor(s). My main responsibility of the week was assisting with the promotional materials of an Author Talk event which will feature local author, Steven C. Wright. At the event, he will be discussing his book "The Weight I Carried" which is a memoir about dealing with the loss of his wife while hiking the Appalachian trail. To help promote this event, I was tasked with creating a description for us to use in social media captions and the library's website.  I was given a promotional flyer for the book given to us by the publishers to work off, and I had to make my own version that was concise and engaging while still capturing the essence of th...

Bloomsburg Public Library Internship Week 7

Week seven of my internship at the Bloomsburg Public Library in the Marketing department was actually quite exciting because it was the week that Raise The Region took place. While I had heard of it during my first week at the library, I didn't actually what it even was until two weeks ago. Raise The Region is a 30-hour online fundraising event done once a year. This year it started on March 11th at 6:00:00 PM and ended on March 12th at 11:59:59 PM. This annual event is organized by the First Community Foundation Partnership with the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships as the main sponsor. It's not just a donation drive, it's a competition. Nonprofits across the region are trying to raise as much money as possible and there are leaderboards dividing them into categories like large, medium, and small organizations. The top three in each category by the end won extra money from Blaise Alexander Family Dealership. Additionally, organizations had the opportunity to win prizes a...
